Seeking a break from work, the novelist Sawai visits Kugenuma Beach with his wife and friends to view the mirages. However, plagued by recurring chronic headaches, he begins to experience strange illusions and hallucinatory visions that seem to creep in through the cracks of everyday life—whether driven by his condition or tricks played by the coastal sands—while encountering a series of ominous occurrences.
